Campbell of Cenél Áeda < Cenél Conaill?

Post by Geoff Melloy »

I have recently come to the conclusion that my y-dna line goes back, a few generations ago, to the name Campbell rather than Melloy/Molloy.
I guess that demolishes my theory that my name may be an anglicization of Mulroy < O Maeldoraidh due to my location on the Big Y tree - i.e. A10680 which (I believe) is associated with Cenel Aeda < Cenel Conaill.
Unfortunately I can find no reference to Campbell (either the Caimbeul or MacCathmhaoil version) as being associated with Cenel Conaill, let alone with the sub-branch Cenel Aeda.
If there is such an association I'd be pleased to hear about it.

Sorry if this post is rather disjointed. It's way past my bedtime down here in Oz!

Geoff,

No worries. I tried a search and nothing relating to a Campbell family among the Cenél Áeda cropped up for me either. From the post viewtopic.php?t=515, possibly an SCE?

Thanks for that. Yes an SCE seems quite likely - probably more than one. It appears that my gt-grandfather Charles Molloy was born Charles Campbell. The situation marriage-wise seems to have been quite fluid in Liverpool at the time. Charles' mother was apparently widowed at least twice, and Charles switched from being a Campbell to a Molloy due do one such event ... I THINK!! I'd probably be best off doing a bit more ground-level research before committing myself to one particular version of the family history. Hopefully one day I'll also get a mate on my branch of A10680.
