New R1b-Y166841/A24040 Clade

Post by Webmaster »

CALLING ALL R1b-BY18120+ Ó CONCHOBAIR, MAC MAGNUSA, AND STACKPOOLE MEN

Moore #FTDNA-905294 recently noticed a new clade on the YFull Y-Haplotree directly under R1b-A259 and parallel to R1b-A260: R1b-Y166841/A24040. This united the 2 R1b-A260- Flanagan men as well as a third unidentified R1b-A260- man. Mr. Moore had recently done a BigY 700 test and he is also R1b-A260-, but investigation by both YFull and Alex Williamson and James Kane revealed his test had no coverage of the region this mutation occurs in. This means it is completely unknown whether he has this mutation or not. He is currently doing an Individual SNP test for this mutation at YSEQ to see if he does have it.

The recent O’Conor Don BigY 700 test also did not cover the region the mutation occurs in, as verified by both YFull and Alex Williamson, so it is also unknown whether he has it or not. This R1b-Y166841/A24040 clade is very exciting because it COULD unite all the R1b-A260- branches of R1b-A259 under a single parent clade. This would in essence provide an umbrella clade for what is almost certainly the Uí Briúin Aí families, parallel to R1b-A260, which is clearly the Uí Briúin Seóla and Bréifne families.

To that end, if any R1b-BY18120+ Ó Conchobair, Mac Magnusa, and Stackpoole men are curious about this possibility, please consider doing an Individual SNP test at YSEQ for the Y166841/A24040 SNP since the BigY coverage for this mutation is problematic. If R1b-BY18120+ men do have it, then we have identified a unifying Uí Briúin Aí clade. If not, then we at least have identified a probable unifying clade for the Cland Cathail branch of the Síl Muiredaig.

Before purchasing ANY test, please do your own research to verify it is a worthwhile test for yourself or any kits you manage. Further, if people want to wait to see if Mr. Moore is R1b-Y166841/A24040+ before testing for it themselves, that is very prudent; as is coordinating the additional testing among the affected men. We want to expand our knowledge of the R1b-A259 Y-Haplotree as much as possible, but not at the expense of someone's hard earned money in a speculative venture.

As a final note, this has the potential for demystifying the origin of the Uí Briúin Aí to a great extent. Some previous speculations on that subject may be found at this link.
